Salon Sanctuary Concerts: Kahal, Court, and Casbah

September 29, 2026
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
America/New_York
St. Paul's Chapel, 1160 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027

The cultural exchange and scientific discovery of pre-Expulsion Spain make the Convivencia ripe for idealization. In this concert. Ensemble Lipzodes embraces the historical record – a haunting repertoire in Arabic, Hebrew, Castillian, and Occitan that speaks of inconvenient truths and bracing recognitions, ripe with resonance for own fractious times.

Brought together by Anna Marsh, Ensemble Lipzodes is a unique group of performers that came together in 2004 in Bloomington, Indiana, and whose members were students completing degrees in the Early Music Institute and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Salon Sanctuary Concerts was founded in 2009 by Artistic Director Jessica Gould in order to present early music in venues appropriate to the repertoire and performances of sacred music in houses of worship open to all. The series has forged a path apart from other presenters through innovative programs which view history through the prism of music.

Live at St. Paul’s Chapel — or, watch on YouTube.
