Nikka Gershman is a flutist and composer who believes in championing the flute as a soloist
instrument. She was accepted to Juilliard at age 15 and was awarded the prestigious Career Grant
from the Salon de Virtuosi. Gershman performed as a soloist with the Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra
in the Wiener Konzerthaus as a winner of the PBS-televised Classicalia competition. The Flute
Almanac global journal recognized her as the 2024 “Emerging Artist of the Year”. Joining this
performance is acclaimed Italian pianist Matteo Generani, who recently released a recording of
Giuseppe Martucci’s piano works on the Naxos label. Gershman’s transcription of Ravel’s La Valse
for flute and piano made her the youngest-ever composer published by Theodore Presser. This
concert culminates with the premiere of her transcription of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz for flute and
piano, which was originally written for full orchestra before being arranged for piano by the
composer himself. Gershman’s version fuses Liszt’s piano adaptation while being faithful to his
orchestral score, and the duet encompasses the entire orchestral sound.
