Makam New York’s project Makam Bridges brings together four musical genres: Middle Eastern Turkish-Ottoman makam, South Asian Carnatic, Iranian, and Afghan music, in a collaborative exploration of new creative frontiers. The union of these diverse musical genres offers a unique opportunity for artists to explore new creative territories, as all four musical traditions have strong improvisational roots. Musicians draw upon these elements to craft fresh interpretations, both vocally and instrumentally, making each performance unique and spontaneous.
This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Arts Engagement and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
