Dongmyung Ahn & Mandy Wolman, violins
In this eclectic program, Duo Sapientia seeks to explore the resonances that emerge from duo violin music from three different periods, the Renaissance, the Baroque, and the Twentieth Century. The four composers featured — Thomas Morley, Orlando Gibbons, J. S. Bach and Béla Bartók — all share contrapuntal textures and fragmentary, conversational gestures. The interplay between modal music and traditional harmony in these pieces creates intriguing interactions for the listeners and players alike.
Duo Sapientia was formed in the spring of 2024 during rehearsal breaks in a Buxtehude project. In true amateur style, Wolman introduced Ahn to Gibbons duos and discovered their mutual sensibilities over phrasing, gestures, and general musick-ing. Since then, they have been scheming to collaborate on various musical projects — most notably, their current Bartók-focused endeavor, as well as one centered on Hildegard.
